About Cancer Hospital of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital)

Founded in October 1963, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital (ZJCH) is one of the earliest four cancer hospitals in China, devoted exclusively to cancer prevention, patient care, research, education and rehabilitation. It plays a leading role in prevention and treatment, and ranks among the top ten in China's Best Oncology for 8 consecutive years.In May 2019, Zhejiang Provincial Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) signed a medical cooperation framework agreement, relying on Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, they are to jointly build Institute of Cancer Research and Basic Medical Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Cancer Hospital of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Hangzhou Medical College.

The hospital has a complete set of disciplines. With 2,008 inpatient beds, it has 51 medical departments including surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology,etc.The multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT) model covers common diseases.In 2018,the hospital cared for more than 520,000 outpatients.The number of inpatient admission was over 113,000, the number of surgery operation was nearly 21,000 and the number of radiotherapy cases was 8,050. Medical service capacity ranks in the forefront of cancer specialized hospital nationwide.The hospital was successfully selected into the National Project of Improving the Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity of Difficult and Complicated Diseases.Oncology has been developed as the National Key Clinical Specialty as well as the Key Medical Support Discipline of Zhejiang Province.

The hospital pays attention to the cultivation of talents. By the end of 2018, the hospital had a total of 2008 employees, including 1,889 medical personnel.The hospital has a number of renowned experts and scholars with important influence at home and abroad, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one chief scientist of the 973 project, one chief scientist of the national key research program,etc. As a national base for standardized training of residents, the hospital has a teaching and research section for oncology, and actively carries out undergraduate education, postgraduate education, standardized training for residents and specialist nursing, and continuing medical education.

The hospital  emphasizes scientific research. Institute of Cancer Research and Basic Medical Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences is the first cancer research institution of the CAS. It is a comprehensive medical research institute established by the CAS outside Beijing,and also the first national-level life health research institution introduced by Zhejiang Province.

The hospital has Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Diagnosis and Therapeutics of Thoracic Cancer (Lung and Esophagus), Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Radiation Oncology, Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Head & Neck Oncology Translational Medicine, Zhejiang Laboratory of Integrated Traditional Chinese & Western Medicine of Cancer. In addition, the hospital owns National Clinical Trial Center, National Post-doctoral Workstation, Zhejiang Lung Cancer Center. The hospital has Biological Specimen Bank with a total of more than 300,000 specimens. It is one of the largest cancer specimen bank in China. 

The publishing houses of “China Cancer” and “Journal of Chinese Oncology” sponsored by the hospital were selected as “Outstanding Journals in East China” and“100 Outstanding Academic Journals in China”. Among them, “China Cancer ” was included in the eighth edition of the Chinese core journal catalogue,with its Academic Journal Clout Index (AJCI) ranking the first in oncology journal nationwide. 

A total of 68 projects were admitted and sponsored by National Science and Technology Major Project, National Key Research and Development Program, and National Natural Science Foundation. As the first completion unit, it has won 14 provincial and ministerial awards and 36 awards at bureau-level. 

The hospital has made great efforts to promote international exchange and  cooperation. It has carried out extensive collaboration in academic exchanges, talent training, scientific research, etc. with international institutions such as MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Hawaii Cancer Center, Duke University, National University of Singapore Medical School, and Charité University Berlin. A memorandum of understanding with MD Anderson Cancer Center was signed in 2014 and a Sister Center Agreement with University of Hawaii Cancer Center was signed in 2014. In 2015, the hospital was approved as Zhejiang International Science Technology Cooperation Base for Cancer Precision Treatment.More than 20 international cooperation research projects have been launched.

The hospital promotes the humanistic spirit. By deepening the “Run at most once” reform, practicing the “Two Serves and One Responsibility” concept, (i.e. serving the patients well, serving the employees well, and taking up the social responsibility of the public hospitals), continuously optimizing the process, improving the service, upgrading the software and hardware, the hospital establishes a garden-style modern cancer hospital with reasonable process, convenient medical treatment and humanism to form a culture atmosphere of dedication, unity, and innovation.
